It's been a busy week(end)!  Cami's been pretty congested all week so we broke out the humidifier on Tuesday.  Since she wasn't running a fever, the nurse at Cami's Dr.'s office said she didn't need to come in.  On Thursday I decided to try and lay Cami in her crib for bed time just to see what would happen.  I didn't want her to cry for an extended period of time since she was semi sick.  I was anticipating having to move her to the swing within 10 minutes but surprisingly she put herself to sleep!  I was amazed!  She wake up at 1am, had a bottle and then went back to sleep in her crib.  Friday night was the same story without the 1am wake up.  On Saturday I was even able to get her to take two naps in her crib - and I can NEVER get her to nap.  It seems like we've made a little breakthrough.

On Saturday I hosted a play date here at the house for my mommy friends at work.  There were 5 other pairs that joined Cami and me for a day of fun.  It was also a good excuse to thoroughly clean the house (thanks mom for the help!).

On Saturday Cami started shoving BOTH hands at one time into her mouth.  All my mommy friends insisted that she was teething.  On Sunday, Cami was super cranky almost all day and seemed like she was in pain.  I figured she probably was teething and gave her Tylenol as necessary.  I did however notice she started tugging on her ear a little bit - but this can be a symptom of teething.

Last night was HORRIBLE though.  Cami was exhausted and went to bed at 7pm.  She woke up around 10:30 seeming to be in pain and hungry so I gave her Tylenol and a bottle and back to sleep she went.  2:45am rolled around and she started whimpering.  She woke up, cried a little, put her hand in her mouth and fell asleep, then repeat 10 minutes later.  I finally figured she wasn't going to sleep on her own for an extended period and prepped her a bottle around 4:00am.  I gave her more Tylenol and a bottle and after a little bit of struggling, put her to bed in her swing.  She slept from 4:30am till I woke her up at 6:30am (momma's gotta work!).  I decided to make a Dr.'s appointment for today since she was still congested and seemed so irritable.  I'm glad I did!  The Dr. checked one ear - no problem.  When she went to check the other, Cami immediately got upset and started crying. Turns out she has her first ear infection.  We got a prescription for antibiotics and are hoping she feels a bit better tomorrow.  Fingers crossed for an uneventful night!

On a happier not, Cami rolled from tummy to back for the first time this weekend!  We got her to do it a few times on both Saturday and Sunday. :)

Still sleeping in the swing.  We've discovered that getting Cami to bed earlier means she is less fussy and she'll still sleep through the night.  During the week we shoot for a bedtime of 7:30 pm.  She will sleep until we wake her up before work at 6:30 am.

Cami's naps are still unpredictable and I have a hard time getting her to nap on the weekends.  She'll fall asleep when I take her on a walk so I've had success leaving her on the back deck in her stroller to get a good nap in...she'll wake up almost instantly if I bring her inside.

Yesterday we had Cami's 4 month checkup and Dr. Silverman said she was looking great.  I talked to her about the reflux symptoms I thought Cami was showing and she agreed that some acid reflux medicine might help.  We got a prescription for baby Zantac which I started her on last night.  Hopefully this will help Cami's fussiness and her one hour nightly awakening.

Dr. Silverman also said we could start Cami on solid foods.  She recommended starting with baby rice cereal.  I think I'm going to wait a week or two at least to see if the Zantac is working before introducing something new.  There's no reason to rush.

Cami also had some dry skin patches that I brought to the Dr.'s attention.  She said it was mild eczema and to use some Cetaphil lotion on it.

Dr.Silverman was impressed with how long Cami sleeps at night and believes once the reflux medicine kicks in we should be able to get her to sleep in her crib again.  Yay!

Not too much has changed since last week!  Cami is still sleeping in her swing in the nursery, but at least she is sleeping.  She’s still waking up about an hour into the night but a quick dose of gripe water and her paci then she’s back to sleep.  Monday night was rough though – I put her down around 8pm and she was up every hour until midnight.
In terms of fussiness – she has good days and bad days.  Thursday my friend Kelly came over for dinner and Cami had a great evening.  She hung out in her bumbo and bouncer while we cooked and then didn’t get fussy until it was time for her bedtime bottle.  On the other hand, Sunday was a ‘bad day’ where she would get really upset about an hour after every bottle she had and was spitting up a lot.
Also on Sunday she had a few streaks of blood in her poopy diaper before bed.  We were a little bit concerned but it turned out to be just a onetime occurrence.
This Thursday is Cami’s 4 month well checkup where she’ll be receiving her next set of vaccines.  A few things I want to discuss with her pediatrician:
  • Starting solid food at 4 months vs. 6 months.
  • Sleep advice – transitioning back to crib and what could be causing her to wake up one hour into sleep EVERY night.
  • How much sleep should she get a night
  • Reflux symptoms
  • How often and how much should she be eating (currently 4 oz every ~3 hours.)

Ha! I spoke too early last week when I said we ‘survived the 3 month growth spurt!’  On both Monday and Tuesday nights Cami was up at 10 pm and 1 am to eat.  Through Thursday she was eating well over 30 oz per day then on Friday she finally slowed down.  The rest of the weekend she took about 28 oz a day – 7 bottles total.  She also slept through the nights.
During the restless nights we relied on the swing a lot to get her to sleep.  It got to the point where she was too wide awake to put in her crib so we’d put her in the swing so she’d eventually fall asleep.  We moved it into her nursery starting Friday night so we could watch her on the monitor and I wouldn’t have to sleep on the couch (like during the week).  Saturday she fell asleep in the swing and I moved her to the crib about 45 minutes later.  She woke up for about 5 minutes then fell back asleep for the night.
I don’t want her sleeping in the swing every night, but at this point our sleep and sanity trumps struggling to get her down in the crib.  Prior to the growth spurt she would pretty much fall asleep during her last bottle (around 9 pm ish) or at least get very drowsy.  It was easy at that point to get her to go to sleep.  Now she is taking an extra (7th) bottle around 10 pm ish and is still pretty awake when it’s time for sleep.  Hopefully now that things have calmed down and she’s back to eating a normal amount we can go back to our ‘normal’ nightly routine with an earlier bedtime and sleeping in her crib.
Cami’s been into making lots of new sounds lately.  She likes to stick her tongue out too.  She also couldn’t LIVE without her hands and fingers lately.  She just LOVES to suck on them nonstop.  It’s good for self soothing.
Cami has been pretty fussy in the evenings lately.  I’m hoping it was semi associated with the growth spurt and that it will pass.

Cameron is 15 Weeks Old!

This seems to be her favorite pose.
Cameron Leigh is 15 Weeks Old!
Age:  15 Weeks
Weight:  13 lbs 13.3 oz
Clothing Size:  Still wearing her 0-3M clothes, Now wearing 3-6M 1 piece sleepers - she's just so long!
Diaper Size:  Pampers Swaddlers Size 1, although we're ready for size 2!  I ordered some new diapers this weekend.

We’ve officially survived the 3 month growth spurt! Wow, that was no joke.  It started slightly last Wednesday.  Cami’s ‘normal’ behavior is to consume 6 bottles a day for a total of about 26 oz.  She typically has 3 of the bottles while at day care.  She also rarely eats in the middle of the night – even if she gets up.  Here’s how the growth spurt went down:
Wednesday:  Cami took a 4th bottle while at daycare.  (28 oz.)
Thursday:  All hell breaks loose.  Cami was up at 11pm (late Weds night).  I try the typical rocking her back to sleep – nothing works.  I go ahead and give her 2 oz. at midnight hoping that would get her back to sleep.   No such luck.  Bryan takes over and gives her the remaining 2 oz. just before 1am.  After an hour she is STILL awake and I take over.  She starts her ‘bloody murder feed me RIGHT now’ screams so I heat up another bottle.  She takes the whole 4 oz. down no problem and immediately passes out.  In total she was up for 3 hours…in the middle of the night.
At daycare she took the extra 4th bottle and the evening at home was relatively normal.  However after being in bed for an hour, she woke up hungry again.  I heated up another bottle and luckily she passed out for the night after the extra 4 oz.  (37 oz.)
Friday:  Cami ate a TON at daycare.  She had the extra 4th bottle I packed plus an additional 1.5 bottles from the emergency freezer stash.  That’s almost twice as much as a ‘normal’ day!  They said she didn’t sleep too much during the day, so hopefully she’d sleep well at home.  Ha, Cami decided she wanted to stay up until 11:30pm and have an extra meal in the process.  Silly girl.  (38 oz.)
Saturday:  Cami was in and out of fussiness all day.  She finally took a LONG nap from 6:30 – 8:30 pm.  After that she stayed up until 11:30 pm again and took 8 bottles total.  (33 oz.)
Sunday:  Things calmed down some.  She slept in until 9 am and took about a 2.5 – 3 hour nap in the afternoon.  I finally had to wake her up for fear she would sleep all evening and be up all night.  She had 7 bottles total.  (28 oz.)
Hopefully she’s finished the growth spurt and things can go back to normal around here!  I will say that I’m glad I had made the switch to pumping because I would have been 10 times more exhausted nursing her as often as she ate.  I was able to pull some milk out of the freezer to account for the extra ounces she was eating.   All in all, I’m happy with this decision and it’s working very well for us.
She also gained weight this week which I was happy to see (and hello! She better have gained weight after all that eating!).  Cami had stalled out the past few weeks and had even lost some from week 13 to week 14.  I’m glad to see we’re moving back in the positive direction.
Yesterday we decided to try her bouncy seat out.  She hasn’t quite figured out the whole bouncing part but the lights and sounds kept her entertained for a few minutes.  We had to put a pillow underneath it since her feet don’t touch the ground yet.
